Season Three of the hit reality show The Sing-Off premiered on September 19th, 2011. Increasing the number of groups from 10 to 16, a new format was introduced over an 11-episode season. Several of the groups consisted of returning singers, while others made their debut on the third season. With Nick Lachey, Ben Folds, and Shawn Stockman all returning to host/judge, Sara Barielles replaced Nicole Scherzinger, leaving to judge The X Factor. Pentatonix won the recording contract and $200,000 on the the season finale, November 28, 2011.

Twists/Changes[]

  • New Format: After being a holiday special the previous seasons, Season Three was expanded into a several-month long competiton, with 16 groups in total. Expanded into an 11-episode season, the groups faced more themes, challenges, and a larger prize.
  • Bracket System: With the multitude of groups, they were split into two brackets for the first four weeks. Once each bracket was whittled down to 5 groups each, they merged into one bracket.
  • New Judge: Singer/songwriter Sara Barielles replaced Nicole Scherzinger, who left due to her commitments of being a judge on the X-Factor.
  • Larger Prize: The winner group's reward was increased from $100,000 to $200,000.
  • Sing-Off Showdown: At the Top 8 and 4, the bottom two groups got one last chance to save themselves, in a sing-off. While at the Top 8, both groups sang the same song with different arrangements, the bottom groups at the Top 4 were asked to re-sing their best song.
